The Copeland Park Community Alliance (CPCA), working alongside the Maitland Area Pollinator Projects (MAPP), has applied to establish a community garden in Greenlawn Park through the City of Ottawa’s Community-Led Greening Initiatives & Gardening Program. The site, location, and initial plans have received preliminary City approval, with a more detailed secondary application currently underway.
If completed, the garden would represent a significant milestone: the City of Ottawa has not approved a new community garden on municipal property since 2019. Between 2015 and 2019, only two were approved in total. The City has since opened a streamlined application process and is actively encouraging residents to build gardens focused on both food production and pollinator support.
What’s Planned
The conceptual design includes three main components:
The project reflects a broader philosophy about the role of green space in urban communities — particularly the recognition that creating native habitat within cities is increasingly critical for sustaining Canada’s biodiversity, much of which overlaps with populated areas.
Why It Matters
The initiative comes at a time when ecologists and urban planners are emphasizing the importance of native plantings and pollinator corridors in densely populated areas. Canada’s most fertile and biodiverse land frequently coincides with its largest population centres, making community-led greening efforts an important complement to public conservation programs.
The CPCA received encouraging early feedback at the 2025 Annual General Meeting and now hopes to translate that interest into concrete volunteer commitments — both for the construction phase and for ongoing maintenance of the gardens over time.
What Comes Next
An information session is being planned for the near future, where neighbours will have the chance to learn more, ask questions, and share feedback. The CPCA website is currently being redeveloped and will soon host the conceptual plans alongside a community survey. If the pilot proves successful, organizers have indicated they would consider extending the garden program to other parks in the neighbourhood.
